Are Snap On Dentures Any Good?

What are snap on dentures?

Snap on or overdentures are removable dentures which are supported and held in place firmly by dental implants. Generally, 4 implants are surgically placed into each upper and lower jaw by a dental implantologist and special attachments are connected to the top of these implants which lock into snaps installed into the inside surface of the dentures. This interlocking action significantly improves the retention of dentures so they wouldn’t slip or move during function.

Once in the mouth, this denture is firmly snapped to dental implants and does not move or slip while chewing. This patient can easily remove the denture for cleaning and snap it back in the mouth.

Are snap on dentures comfortable?

The short answer is “yes”. Snap on dentures are locked in place by dental implants and don’t slip or move while chewing and talking. Due to their excellent retention and stability while chewing and talking, snap on dentures are very comfortable and convenient. Patients who use snap on dentures can comfortably chew and speak. Unlike regular dentures, snap on dentures do not limit your diet to soft food only. You can enjoy having a complete diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, nuts, meat, and other necessary nutrients.

Are snap on dentures removable?

Yes, you can easily unsnap your snap on dentures and remove them from your mouth. They can also be easily snapped back into the mouth. This makes the cleaning and maintenance of your snap on dentures very easy and is particularly helpful in older people who have lost their manual dexterity and find it hard to brush and floss their teeth.

Are snap on dentures expensive?

Snap on dentures are much less costly than other full mouth reconstructions such as All On 4. The cost may vary depending on whether you have existing teeth to be extracted, bone graft is needed, and a few other factors. If you have lost all your teeth and already have full dentures, by simply adding dental implants, those dentures may easily be converted to snap on dentures. This will significantly reduce your overall costs. To find out what treatment is best for you, Dental Implant Centers offer complimentary consultation. How long does a snap on denture last?

Snap on dentures are made of acrylic base and composite teeth. They are durable and strong; however, they do wear down in time. The rate of wear depends on individual’s diet. Obviously, snap on dentures wear down faster on individuals who eat very hard food. The average age of a snap on dentures is about 5-8 years but it may function up to 15 or even 20 years, depending on diet and how they are maintained.

What are the snap on dentures benefits?

Stability is the most important benefit of snap on dentures. Unlike regular dentures which are loose and unstable while chewing, snap on denture is firmly locked to dental implants and provide effective chewing.  This enables you to have a complete diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and meat. By being able to have a complete diet, snap on dentures contribute to better overall health.

Another very important benefit of snap dentures is their reduced bulk compared to regular denture. Since snap on denture derive their support and retention form dental implants rather than gum, they can be fabricated with minimal bulk. This will greatly enhance the sense of taste and avoid speech problems associated with regular dentures.

Snap on dentures transfer the chewing forces directly to the supporting dental implants and jawbone. This stimulates jawbone remodeling and prevents atrophy which is associated with the use of regular dentures. The long-term benefits of this are quite significant in preserving the overall facial shape and structures, and in preventing premature facial aging.

How long is the treatment process for snap on dentures?

The normal treatment process for a snap on dentures is about 4 months. Usually only one surgery is done to place 3-4 dental implants in upper and lower jaw. The surgery is done comfortably under local anesthetics. Post-operative healing is usually smooth and associated with very little or no pain. Once dental implants are in place, they require about 4 months to get bonded to the jawbone and be ready for function. Snaps are then attached to dentures and treatment is completed.
